The main scientific interests are related to Heterocyclic Chemistry and Chirality.
Research topics:
a) Polyconjugated heterocyclic semiconductors:
Oligo- and poly-heterocycles with high constitutional and stereochemical order, functionalized with C60 fullerene, crown-ethers and calixarenes for chemo-selective sensors for the detection of small molecules and ions. Structure-properties relationships.
Inherently chiral oligo- and poly-thiophenes: an innovative strategy for introducing chirality in organic policonjugated materials. (Grant from Cariplo Foundation) Application as highly enantioselective chiral surfaces on achiral electrodes.
Dendritic (spider-like) achiral and inherently chiral oligo-thiophenes: a novel class of organic semiconductors.
b) Chiral ligands for homogeneous stereoselective catalysis:
Chiral diphosphane chelating ligands with a biheteroaromatic atropisomeric backbone. Electronic tuning of the donor centre (world patents).
Diphospholane ligands with thiophene and pyrrole scaffold (world patents).
c) Chirality in the absence of rigid stereogenic elements: the residual enantiomers:
Chiral C3 symmetric tris-arylphosphanes and phosphane-oxides existing as residual enantiomers. Experimental and theoretical investigation on the stereodynamics and stereolability of three-bladed molecular propellers.
